If you are a novice woodworker, there are a number of basic terms you should learn as you undertake your next woodworking project. One term you will come across is "joinery". This term refers to the usage of various types of joints that connect pieces of wood together thus making a more complex wood structure such as furniture. Of course this term not only applies to wood furniture, but to just about any structure that uses wood, such has a house.

Generally speaking, it is usually best to get a set of drawings that you can pick and choose the exact project that you feel accomplished enough to complete.

Start With Basic Projects

Most of us are familiar with Aristotle's popular adage that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." While these words of wisdom often hold true in woodworking, joinery can make or break a piece of woodwork. The type and quality of joints affects the functionality and sturdiness of any piece of woodwork that is made up of more than one component. Knowledgeable woodworkers are familiar with numerous types of joinery and have the experience to determine when and how to use each type of joint. The most appropriate joint to use for a given task depends on several factors, including the intended function of the piece being fashioned and the woodworker's skill level. Often, the strongest joints are also the most complex and difficult to accomplish. Beginner woodworkers may want to start out with simpler projects to learn basic joinery skills before attempting to create heirloom furniture pieces that will stand up to the test of time.

The butt joint is the simplest to build, as it involves only joining two piece wood together at a right angle. This type of joint is the quickest to employ because of its simplicity. The butt joint is usually held together with screws or nails. If dowels are used the joint is called a dowel reinforced butt joint. A dowel reinforced butt joint does not require nails or screws as dowels and glue are used in their place.

Now you know the basics of biscuit joinery and have an arsenal of tips to help you along on your next project. It's time for you to research and choose your biscuit joiner and start getting what no article in the world can give you - biscuit joining experience. Good luck, have fun, and most of all... BE SAFE!

h) Your joiner blade can collect just as much gunk as your saw blades. Keep your WD-40 handy for cleaning the blade off and always replace the blade if it starts to burn your wood.

If you're a new woodworker then the chances are good that you've heard the term "biscuit joint" but had visions of grandma baking up a piping hot tray of buttermilk biscuits. You're on the right track if you're thinking "a method for joining two pieces of wood," because that's precisely what a biscuit joint is. Not only that, it's one of the simplest methods of true joinery and a great place for beginning woodworkers to get started with learning the basics.
