- 1). Fill the washing machine with enough cold water for your clothing to move around freely.
- 2). Check the back of the dye package to see how much dye powder you need, depending on how much clothing you want to dye.
- 3). Measure the required powder and dissolve it in 2 cups of hot water.
- 4). Soak the clothing in the washer. Remove, straighten and lay the clothing aside.
- 5). Add the dissolved dye to the water in the washing machine and place the fabric in the dye bath. Leave the garments in the dye bath for at least 30 minutes before starting an extended wash cycle.
- 6). Rinse with cold water until the water runs clear. Use 2 or 3 tbsp. of mild detergent if the shade is very dark and the water still contains color after two or three rinses.
- 7). Dry the fabric according to the directions on the tag. If there is no tag, tumble-dry on low or line-dry.
- 8). Wipe out the washer and dryer thoroughly to avoid accidentally dyeing your next load of laundry.
