Making a Weaved Easter Basket

    Making the Weft

    • 1). Measure a rectangle that is 11 inches wide and 5 inches long on the first cardboard sheet. Cut out the rectangle. Repeat the process to create a second identical cardboard rectangle.

    • 2). Lay the first rectangle on a flat surface so the 11-inch side is horizontal. Measure 3 inches in from the left edge toward the center and draw a straight line vertically from the top of the cardboard to the bottom of the cardboard. Repeat the process from the right edge. This will divide the rectangle into three sections; the center section should measure 5 inches on each side.

    • 3). Measure one-inch sections along the vertical left side of the rectangle and mark each section. Draw horizontal lines from the left edge to the vertical centerline on the left side of the center square at each 1-inch mark. Repeat the process on the right side of the rectangle. Lay the ruler across the entire rectangle to verify the lines on the left and right sides are parallel with each other. Trace the horizontal lines with the thick black marker.

    • 4). Lay the cardboard on a cutting board. Cut along each black line on each side of each black line to create two parallel cuts. Cut out the black line to create 1/8-inch gaps between each flap. These flaps will become the warp for the basket. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the rectangle. Repeat all of the steps with the second cardboard sheet to create a second identical rectangle with flaps.

    Weaving the Basket

    • 1). Score along the centerline of each rectangle with the bone folder. Lay the ruler along the line cut and gently fold each flap into a vertical position. Lay the first cardboard sheet on a flat surface so the tabs are to the right and left. Place the second sheet on top of the first so the tabs are to the top and bottom. Glue the two sheets together in the center.

    • 2). Bend the tabs on the warp so the tab in the lower-left corner is down flat and the next tab sits vertically. Repeat this pattern so every other tab is horizontal around the outside of the rectangle. Cut four strips of cardboard 1 inch wide and 10 inches long. Fold the strip in half at the 5-inch mark. Place this strip of cardboard so the corner rests at a corner of the basket and the sides nestle between the tabs. Repeat with another strip and place it on the opposite corner so the first layer of weaving has been created. Trim any excess cardboard from the strips.

    • 3). Fold each horizontal tab up into a vertical position so it is on the opposite side of the woven cardboard as the tabs next to it. Apply glue to the cardboard strip where it touches each tab and secure in place with a paper clip. Wait 10 minutes for the glue to dry before continuing.

    • 4). Remove the paper clips. Reverse the location of the warp for the second level. Weave a second strip of cardboard above the first strip using the same method as the first strip. Start the weaving in the opposite corners from the first set of cardboard strips. Glue and hold in place with paper clips as you did for the first level. Allow the glue to dry for at least 15 minutes.

    • 5). Fold the top of each tab inside the box and glue in place. Use paper clips to hold the tabs down until the glue dries, approximately 10 minutes. Cut a strip of cardboard 1 inch wide and 8 inches long. This will be the handle for the basket. Glue one side of the cardboard strip to the inside of one side of the basket, placing it toward the center of the chosen side. Glue the other side of the strip on the opposite side. Allow the glue to dry completely.
