How to Make a Sewing Patch

    Reinforcing Patch

    • 1). Cut a rectangular patch, the right size for the area you wish to reinforce, from the same material as the thing you are patching. For example, if you are reinforcing a tarp around a grommet, cut a rectangle from tarp. If you are reinforcing the knees on a pair of jeans cut the rectangle from another piece of denim.

    • 2). Iron the patch so that a there are no wrinkles or bumps. This will insure that the patch goes on smooth.

    • 3). Iron an iron-on fusing material onto the back of the patch.

    • 4). Turn the edges of the material under so there are no raw edges exposed and sew them under. This will give the patch a nice finished look.

    • 5). Iron the patch over the area that you want to reinforce. Make sure that it is centered and lined up nicely before you iron it in place. Once you iron over it, the fusing will hold it in place and you will not be able to reposition it.

    • 6). Stitch a 1/4-inch in from the edge all the way around the patch, sewing the patch into place.

    Decorative patch

    • 1). Iron the fabric you want to make a patch from. You want it to be smooth when you cut is so that the patch is not misshapen.

    • 2). Use a washable fabric marker to trace around a cookie cutter or stencil on the material. This is a simple way to get a shaped patch that looks like a star, or a heart that is even and symmetrical.

    • 3). Cut out the patch. Be careful to cut along the outside of the marker lines to prevent cutting a patch that is to small.

    • 4). Iron iron on fusing to the back of the patch according to manufacturers directions. Turn the edges of the patch under so that there are no raw edges exposed if you are using a material that will fray. Iron the patch onto the base material in the location desired.

    • 5). Stitch around the patch to secure its position. You can use a decorative stitch or just a basic straight stitch depending on the look you desire.
