- 1). Mix the contents of a bleaching kit together according to the package directions with gloved hands. Use an old towel and clothing while dyeing hair in case of stains.
- 2). Use a rat-tail comb to separate a piece of hair about 1/2 to 1 inch thick and place a foil strip beneath it. Start in the back first. You may need a friend to help you with this.
- 3). Squeeze the bleach onto the separated strip of hair, coating it completely. Start 1/2 inch away from the scalp and coat all the way to the ends. Fold the foil strip in half, and then in half again to secure it to the head. Repeat with the rest of the hair on the top layer, leaving 2 to 3 inches between strands.
- 4). Leave the bleach on for up to 45 minutes, depending on how dark your hair is. Unfold a foil strip to check for desired lightness; hair should be a pale yellow. Once hair has reached this color, remove all the foils carefully without pulling and shampoo. Towel-dry and comb your hair out.
- 5). Mix 1.5 ounces of a silver toner with 3 ounces of 20 volume developer in a plastic applicator bottle. The toner should have a blue or purple base, which will counteract the yellow or brassy tones left behind by the bleach and color the hair silver.
- 6). Apply the toner to damp hair wearing a new pair of gloves, only on the strands that were bleached. If it gets on the rest of the hair that was not colored, it will not affect it since toner does not lift color, but deposit it.
- 7). Leave the toner on for 10 to 15 minutes. Any longer and the toner will start to color the hair. Rinse it out with warm to cool water and apply a conditioner. Leave the conditioner on for 10 minutes and rinse it out.
