- 1). Lay your original piece on the light table, after turning on your light table. Most tables have an on/off switch, but if your table is homemade or an inexpensive model, it may just be a matter of plugging it in to a socket. If the surface of the original is painted or rough, you can put it face down on the table for a smoother tracing surface. This will leave you with a reverse image of the original. Alternatively, place a separate piece of glass or other translucent material over the original.
- 2). Lay your tracing paper over the original. If you are using a piece of glass over the original, lay the tracing paper over the glass.
- 3). Secure the tracing paper at the corners with tape. If the original piece is valuable, take care to avoid getting tape on it.
- 4). Draw over the lines that show through your tracing paper with your pen. This will create a reproduction of the original. For a sparse image, only trace the main lines or the piece, or go for more detail by tracing all of the lines you can. Experiment with different pens for different effects.
