- 1). Lay your canvas on a flat, clean surface. Choose any size canvas you like, from about 6 inches tall to several feet across. You may also choose several medium-sized canvases and paint them with corresponding designs.
- 2). Arrange your stencils on the canvas. Choose a visually stimulating graphic design for your tapestry. Filigree vines work well, as do vignettes with birds and butterflies. Choose something like a cityscape or outlines of various types of wine bottles. Match the stencil to your personality.
- 3). Tape the stencils at the edges with masking tape to hold them in place. The stencils must be straight; a crooked stencil will create a crooked design.
- 4). Squeeze acrylic paint onto a plastic pallet. Dip a sponge brush into the paint and blot it gently on the pallet. Press the brush down onto one part of the stencil, bring it straight up and press down again.
- 5). Refill your brush as necessary for a strong, solid design, or let the paint run out to create a design with graded color. Let the design dry for at least two hours.
- 6). Remove the stencil from the canvas and carefully tape it down right next to the freshly dried design. Match up the lines of the stencil with the lines of the painted design. This way, you get a continuous design over the entire tapestry.
- 7). Continue painting the canvas until it is full. Let the canvas dry overnight and hang it anywhere you wish.
