How To Quilt - My Essential Dos And Don'ts

Making your own quilt for the first time could be fun as well as confusing. Even though it is quite easy to learn how to quilt, it might take some time and effort from your side to get skilled in this art. Here in this article we have listed out a few of the do's and don'ts related to the quilting task. This might help you to learn how to quilt the easy way.

Top 4 Do's

- If you are just a newbie, then you need to start with some simple and easy quilt patterns so that you can complete the task successfully. You may want to try baby quilts, place mats or pillowcase's since these are relatively easy to maneuver and most suitable for starters in quilt making.

- Before you start working on the fabric, make sure that it is pre-washed. Choosing 100% cotton fabrics is an excellent idea as they do not pucker and therefore easy to handle. There are also various colors, patterns and styles to choose with.

- Be sure to work with seams consistently. It's not recommended to keep varying the seam allowance in the middle of the project. Just find one that you're comfortable to use and stick with it all throughout the quilt making process. A fourth of an inch allowance is recommended for beginners.

- You are just a beginner and are liable to make several mistakes. It takes some time and effort from your side to master the quilting skills. So don't get dejected if the output is not as good as you expected it to be, have patience while you practice the quilting skills.

Top 3 Don'ts

- Readymade templates are available but it is not good idea to use one in the starting stages as you could get confused. Use simple patterns that use same size fabric strips and block sizes.

- Avoid using heavy batting since it tends to be tougher to cut and quilt.

- Don't be a perfectionist. It's ok to make errors on your first project since it's your first try. Don't get discouraged and give up the project simply because you made some silly mistakes. Learning how to quilt expertly takes time and patience. Also, don't rush things and be sure you spend some time to do every stem properly. Ensure that you press your pieces and that your seams are all accurate.
