Sewing Projects for Recycled Jeans

    Denim Quilts

    • Create a patchwork quilt using squares cut from old jeans. Cut 25 denim squares of equal size. To make a 52-by-52 inch quilt, cut each square to be 6 by 6 inches. Sew the squares together row by row, then sew the rows together. After the face of the quilt is made, line the quilt with batting and sew another piece of fabric on as a backing.

    Tote Bag

    • Cut nine 13-by-5 inch rectangles from the legs of an old pair of jeans. Use two different colored pairs of jeans if you want a contrasting striped look for your tote bag. Sew four rectangles together to make the front of the tote, and four to make the back of the tote. Place the two panels together, the right side of the fabric facing in and sew them together on the two sides, leaving the top and bottom open. Sew the last rectangle along the bottom, making the base of the tote. Use the seam lines leftover from the legs of the jeans to add straps to your bag. Cut the strips to your desired length and sew the ends of the strips to the inside of the front and back panels.

    Denim Pot Holder

    • Cut open your jeans so you have a flat piece of material to work with. Once your jeans are flat, lay them on a cutting mat and use a rotary cutter to cut a 10-by-10-inch square out of the denim. Cut another denim square, measuring 11.5 by 11.5 inches. Cut a piece of batting measuring 10 by 10 inches. Lay the three squares on top of each other, the batting in the middle, lined up with the 10-by-10-inch square. Fold the larger square over the two smaller squares, turning the fabric in so the frayed edges are hidden and pinning all four edges. Sew along the pinned edges to create your potholder.

    Denim Placemats

    • Cut rectangles from old jean legs into desired size for placemats. Cut the back pockets from the jeans and pin them to the rectangle, off to one side. Sew along the three sides of the pocket, leaving the top open. Wash the placemats so the cut edges will fray, and trim any excess strings that are hanging off. Set your table with your placemats, adding silverware and a folded napkin to the pocket.
