Homemade Girls Hair Bows

    Fluffy Hair Bows

    • Your little girl will love helping you make fluffy hair bows from strips of ribbon tied around a barrette. Your ribbon can be 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch wide in a variety of coordinating colors and patterns.

Cut 10 4-inch strips of ribbon and heat seal the ends to avoid fraying. You can easily seal ribbon with a candle: Hold the end of the ribbon tightly, as close to the end as possible without burning yourself, and then swipe the ribbon through the flame.

Tie the ribbons around the barrette in a row to make a homemade hair bow. Double knots will hold the ribbons securely.

    Loopy Hair Bows

    • Create a large loopy hair bow with a layer of 1/4-inch ribbon looped and stitched together in the center. You can make any size loops you like, but make each successive layer 1 inch smaller than the last. To make a 3-inch loopy bow, begin with six strips of ribbon cut in 9-inch lengths. It's a good idea to heat seal the ends by swiping them through a candle flame so the ribbon will not fray.

Stack the ribbons, print side down, and bring the ends together to form a loop. Insert a threaded needle halfway through the center of the loop. Secure the ribbons around the needle with a hair clip to hold them in place, and then spread the ribbons apart evenly.

Begin threading the ends of your ribbon onto the needle, forming loops all the way around. Bring the needle all the way through to secure the loops together. Layer two more sections just like this one, but with four strips of ribbon 8 inches long for section two and 7 inches long for section three.

Stitch the layers together in the center and attach a rhinestone or any kind of small embellishment to the center with hot glue. Tie the loopy bow onto a barrette.

    Vintage Hair Bows

    • You can create elegant homemade hair bows with ready-to-make barrettes and vintage rhinestone earrings or broaches. Clip the earrings along the length of a barrette or at the end of a flathead hair pin for interchangeable styles. You could also snip the backings from earrings or broaches and glue them onto the barrette with hot glue.
