Use cardboard to make a durable purse pattern you can reuse.Seamless cardboard texture image by Anton Gvozdikov from Fotolia.com
Create a pattern for your purse design. Decide what size and shape you would like the purse to be. Remember your purse can be constructed out of one rectangular piece of fabric stitched together along the sides, or it can be made into a box shape with a bottom section and four distinct side pieces. Trace the body of a purse you already have onto cardboard or tissue paper, or draw the purse shape freehand if you prefer. Use scissors to cut the pattern out. - 2
Straight pins that can be easily removed work best for sewing projects.pins image by Ekaterina Lozanova from Fotolia.com
Use the pattern as a guide to cut out the fabric pieces for your purse. Turn the fabric pieces to face inward so the finished sides of the fabric are faced toward each other. Pin each section together along the seams where you will sew the purse. It should look like an inside-out purse at this point. - 3
Sewing over pins in fabric can break or damage sewing machine needles.sewing machine image by Peter Baxter from Fotolia.com
Fold over the edge of the fabric along each seam to secure the frayed edges of the fabric. Use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to hand-sew the seams all along the purse construction. Make sure you are using coordinating thread and the correct type of needle. Thicker fabric requires a heavy gauge needle, and thin delicate fabric calls for a finer needle. Remove the pins as you go, and keep smoothing out the fabric in your hands to ensure a straight stitch. - 4

Flip the purse so it is no longer inside-out. Check each seam to make sure there are no gaps, and trim loose threads with a pair of scissors. Stitch a handle or strap to the inside of the purse about 1 to 2 inches from the top edge. You can also add an interior lining or pockets if you wish. - 5

Embellish the exterior of the purse in any way you desire. You can attach additional fabric swatches, buttons or ribbon with glue or thread. Stitch a monogram of a special symbol or your initials. You can also add unique charms or iron-on patches.
