- 1). Make three chain stitches and join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Chain one and make eight half double crochets in that circle; join with a slip stitch.
- 2). Make your stitches in the back loop only of every stitch for this round and each subsequent round. This will give your newsboy cap a bumpy, ridged look. Make two half double crochets in every stitch around for round two; join with a slip stitch. You should have a total of 16 half double crochet stitches now.
- 3). Increase the width of your hat. To do this, add eight half double crochets to each round. For the third round, make one half double crochet in the first stitch followed by two in the next stitch; repeat this pattern around for a total of 24 stitches and join with a slip stitch. For row four, make one half double crochet in each of the first two stitches followed by two in the next stitch; repeat this pattern around for a total of 32 stitches and join with a slip stitch. For each subsequent round, add one more individual half double crochet stitch before the two-in-one stitch in your repeated pattern. Continue to increase until you have a total of 64 half double crochet stitches.
- 4). Work evenly around for four rounds. To do this, chain one and make one half double crochet stitch in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch. This will bring you to the end of round 12.
- 5). Decrease the width of your hat. To do this, for round 13, half double crochet in each of the first six stitches and then half double crochet the next two stitches together. Repeat this pattern around for a total of 56 stitches; join with a slip stitch. For round 14, crochet five individual half double crochets before making two together; in round 15 you will make four individual stitches before two together. This will bring you down to a total of 40 stitches in your round.
- 6). Crochet evenly around for three more rounds. To do this, make one chain and put one half double crochet in every stitch of the round, then join with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in your loose ends.
- 7). Find the center front stitch in your hat brim. Count 7 stitches to the right of this stitch and join your yarn there using a slip stitch. Chain one and half double crochet in each of the next 15 stitches; chain one and turn. Make one more row where you half double crochet in each stitch across. Chain one and turn; work half double crochet two together in the first two stitches, then make one half double crochet in each of the next 11 stitches and work half double crochet two together in the last two stitches. Fasten off and weave in your ends; the brim of your bumpy crocheted newsboy cap is complete.
