- 1). Disconnect the external devices from your computer, such as a printer, external hard drives, and network interfaces.
- 2). Visit the manufacturers' websites for all of your key system devices such as the video and sound cards. Search for and download any available driver updates for these devices.
- 3). Visit the Windows Update website (link under "Resources") using the Internet Explorer web browser. Download all available updates for Windows. Restart your computer. Check to see if Standby mode is available when you click on "Shut Down." If it is not, continue.
- 4). Click "Start," then click "Control Panel." Double click "Device Manager." Click on the plus sign next to "Computer." If you do not see the term "ACPI" here, your computer does not support the power management features required for Standby.
- 5). Hit the Windows logo and "R" keys on the keyboard simultaneously to bring up the Run dialog box. In this box, type "powercfg.cpl" without the quotation marks and hit "Enter." Click the "Hibernate" tab. Check the box labeled "Enable Hibernation." Click "Apply."
- 6). Click the "Advanced" tab. Check to ensure that "Standby" and "Hibernate" are selectable as options for how Windows should behave when the power button is pressed. If they are, the "Standby" option should be available when you shut your computer down. If it does not, your computer may be unable to use this feature. Contact your computer manufacturer to confirm this.
