- 1). Right-click an empty area of the Windows Vista taskbar, and select "Properties."
- 2). Click the "Notification Area" tab of the taskbar properties window.
- 3). Uncheck "Volume" under "System icons" to remove the Windows Vista system volume icon from the notification area.
- 4). Check "Hide inactive icons" in the top "Icons" section, and click "Customize." A separate window appears.
- 5). Click the drop-down menu next to your sound card's volume control, and select "Hide" to remove it from the notification area.
- 6). Click "OK" to close the new window, and "OK" again to close the taskbar properties window. Both volume icons are now gone.
