How to Use Windows XP Professional to Upgrade to Windows MCE 2005

    • 1). Locate and purchase a copy of Windows Media Center Edition 2005. It's an OEM product, which means it won't come with documents, but you don't need the documents to upgrade from Windows XP Professional to MCE 2005. You can purchase the software from an online store like Tiger Direct (see Resources).

    • 2). Upgrade to Windows MCE by finding the first installation disc it comes with and putting it into your disc drive (the first installation disc will be labeled "Disc one"). Windows XP will auto-detect the disc and give you several options. Click on "Install Windows" and in the next screen make sure the installation type is set to "Upgrade."

    • 3). Click "Next" and enter your product key that came with your Windows MCE 2005 installation.

    • 4). Click the "Next" button.

    • 5). Let Windows proceed with the automatic installation. Eventually, it will ask you to insert disc two to continue. When you get that message, insert disc two and it will continue to automatically upgrade Windows. It will occasionally stop and ask you to enter information. When it stops, just enter the required information and click "Next."

    • 6). Wait for the upgrade to complete. It will display a message when it completes the upgrade telling you "Congratulations on installing Windows MCE 2005." You have now used Windows XP Professional to upgrade to Windows MCE 2005.
