- Drivers are coded instructions that tell Windows XP how to control devices like external hard drives, USB keyboards and mice, printers and USB headphones. While Windows XP comes loaded with a storehouse of drivers for many different devices, the collection of drivers may not include your headphones if they came out after your version of Windows XP was last updated.
- If Windows XP fails to find the proper drivers, you will need to install them using the disc that came bundled with your headphones. Insert the disc into your CD drive and when prompted to run the setup process, agree to the installation. Your computer may prompt you to reboot after the process is complete, but your headphone volume buttons should work properly going forward. If you do not have the disc, check the manufacturer's website for available driver downloads.
- Starting with Service Pack 2, Microsoft made updates to Windows XP that resolved a lot of issues with missing device drivers. Subsequent service packs have continued to add driver support and system functionality. If you have not yet updated your version of Windows, you can download the new service packs on Microsoft's website.
