- 1). Save your work and then close all open programs.
- 2). Remove and CDs, DVDs, USB drives or floppy disks from your computer's peripheral devices.
- 3). Click the Windows "Start" button, select the arrow located to the right of the lock icon at the bottom-right corner of the menu, and then click "Restart." Windows will start to shut down immediately, a process that generally takes one to two minutes complete.
- 4). Press and hold the "F8" key as soon as the shut down process completes and Windows begins to restart again. If your computer has multiple versions of Windows installed, first use the arrow keys to highlight the Windows Vista option, and then press the "F8" key once. In either case, the Advanced Boot Options screen will appear within a few seconds.
- 5). Use the arrow keys within the Advanced Boot Options screen to highlight the type of Safe Mode you want to use. The basic "Safe Mode" starts Windows Vista with the minimum number of required drivers and services. The "Safe Mode With Networking" option additionally loads network drivers and services that allow you to access the Internet or other networked computers. The "Safe Mode With Command Prompt" option loads only the Windows Vista Command Prompt.
- 6). Press the "Enter" key to confirm your choice. Windows Vista will start in the selected Safe Mode immediately. Depending on your computer's configuration, you may additionally need to select your user account and provide your password to complete the startup process.
