PC Diagnostic Utilities

• Most operating systems have a diagnostic utility included with the installation. These diagnostic utilities will help determine if your hardware is working and whether your devices are functioning properly. Though it is limited, diagnostic software from your operating system can give you a basic idea of which hardware is malfunctioning. Using this information, you may be able to determine which hardware to replace.
  
  Windows utilities such as scandisk.exe and defrag.exe can help determine problems with your hard drive. You can use the Hardware Manager in Windows' Control Panel to test whether your hardware is properly communicating with your operating system.
  
  Most Linux and Unix releases have diagnostic utilities included with the software package. Check the website for your unique Linux package to find out how to access the diagnostic tools.
  
  

PC Diagnostic Software Packages

• The Internet offers a plethora of software packages to help you diagnose and repair problems with your computer.
  
  Be careful which programs you use, since some freeware diagnostic software is bundled with spyware or other malware that can compromise the integrity and security of your system.
  
  Diagnostic software such as FreshDiagnose and PCPitstop can help you determine which hardware is malfunctioning and the nature of the hardware malfunction.
  
  If your freeware diagnostic program offers limited information about diagnosing your particular hardware, you can still use the information. Check your hardware manufacturer's website for statistics on the ideal operating readings of your hardware, and compare them with the readings you get from your software diagnostics package to determine which hardware is malfunctioning.
  
  For Mac users, SourceForge offers a freeware Mac diagnostic program called AppleJack.
  
  If freeware and shareware programs fail to determine your problem, you can still try retail diagnostic programs, which may have more features and information. Some freeware diagnostic programs offer a full version with additional functions which may help solve your problem.
  
  

Internal Diagnostics

• If your hardware is not being detected by the system, if it has stopped responding, or if the diagnostic software is unable to determine the problem with the hardware, check your connections.
  
  If the malfunctioning hardware is an internal device, you may need to open the computer to access the hardware cords. Ensure that both ends of the cords are securely connecting your hardware with your computer.
  
  If necessary, your hardware may also have a connection to the power supply which converts electricity for your computer. Check your hardware manual or manufacturer's website for more specific information about which cables are required to operate your hardware.
