Welding projects include one-of-a-kind home decor items crafted from scrap such as candle holders and animal sculptures. Skateboarding rails can also be fashioned from discarded metal. Be sure to follow all the safety rules of welding. Wear all of your protective gear, keep children and bystanders away while working. Use the tools in the proper way. - Use round pieces of steel. These can often be found at construction sites. Using only the flat round shapes, make a candle holder. Decide on the layout of the piece then weld circles vertically then horizontally. The horizontal sections should be completely flat so that a candle can safely be placed on the surface. Have the candles spiral around a center of circles welded together end-to-end.
A piece of molten metal can also be used as the base for a candle wall hanging. Place the circles at a right angle on the metal wall hanging. Begin by deciding on the direction the piece of molten metal should be hung. Attach a strong hanging wire to the back. Mark where the candles should be placed. Weld the circles in place. - Make a variety of skateboard rails with scraps of industrial shelving racks. Custom-design the length, height and amount of bends to accommodate the needs of your favorite skateboarder. Use a chop saw to cut the shelving. Clamp the sections to form the shapes you desire and then weld securely together. Make footings for the structure with 2x4s. Sand down the edges of the metal and then paint with outdoor spray paint. Seal with several coats of shellac.
- Use horseshoes to make an armadillo sculpture. You will need approximately 10 horseshoes for each armadillo. Begin by attaching 3 or 4 horseshoes. Attach one for the head and one for the rear. Bend the bottoms of the horseshoes to create feet so that the sculpture stands. The armadillo face is made with half of a horseshoe and two pieces of metal for ears. The other half can be the tail or you can use a bent metal rod. Add six horseshoes over the center to make the armadillo's armor. Paint the entire structure with metal paint suitable for outdoors. Place on your porch as a doorstop or conversation piece.
