- 1). Lay the box flat, making it longer than taller, for a ranch style house. Stand the box up to give it added height if you are constructing a multi-level doll home.
- 2). Cut off one side for an open-walled look. Choose one of the two large main sides, using the piece that has the box opening in it. Place the cut cardboard aside to use later.
- 3). Measure the dimensions of the box to determine the size required to make snugly fit walls or floors in the box spaces. Draw to the measurements on extra pieces of cardboard. Cut the pieces out and glue into place. To vary the design, glue different sized shoe boxes inside the main cardboard box. This option provides a sturdy, simple design, but may not be quite as customizable as making your own walls and floors.
- 4). Draw with markers or cut pieces of square and rectangular shaped construction paper to glue on to create windows and doors. Add fabric curtains to the windows by cutting small pieces of scrap felt or other soft material. Glue these to the sides of the windows.
- 5). Paint with craft paints and a thin bristled brush to create decorative touches on the walls, such as faux wallpaper. Make designer looking floors by painting them fanciful colors with a large bristled brush or gluing fabric and carpet scraps down as area rugs.
- 6). Place some of your child's favorite doll furniture in the house to finish the look.
