- Allow children to dip paintbrushes into dishes of fabric paint and splatter the paint onto T-shirts, or attach T-shirts to toy spin art machines and have students squirt fabric paint from bottles onto the shirts as they spin. Teach a lesson while doing this project by having children identify the colors they are using and the shapes that are created.
- Purchase sponges in the shape of letters at a craft store or hobby store, and have children dip the sponges in fabric paint to create words on the shirts. Coach students as they work to teach them about recognizing and sounding out letters. Help students create their own name out of the letters so they can become familiar with seeing their name written out.
- Prepare liquid or powdered dye per the instructions on the package, and provide the students with rubber bands or string. Help the students tie off parts of the shirt to create shapes and designs. Work with the students to dip the tied shirts into the prepare dye mixture. Wash the shirts in cold water after they are dyed, with the rubber bands or strings attached. Help the students remove the ties, and allow the shirts to hang dry. Teach lessons about colors and shapes during this project.
- Cut up pieces of fruits and vegetables, have the children dip them in fabric paint, and then press them onto T-shirts. Apples and pears work well with this project when cut in half. Have the students use grapes cut in half for small circles and carrots or celeries for long lines. Teach the students how to identify fruits, vegetables and colors during this project.
