When football season starts, some of your students may be so caught up in the spirit that they have a hard time concentrating in class. Indulge them by creating some football art projects. Even the students who haven't been pulled in by the popular sport will enjoy creating these projects to bring home to mom and dad. Keep in mind that some of these projects require adult supervision and the use of an oven. - This craft is simple and inexpensive and can be done in the classroom or at home during the game. Preheat an oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit and mix together a cup of salt, 2 cups of flour and a cup of water to create the dough. Knead and then roll the dough flat before cutting the dough into footballs with a cookie cutter. Use a toothpick to draw on the laces and borders and bake them for 2 to 2.5 hours. Use 2 coats of brown paint to give the footballs their iconic color.
- Grab yourself some cheap team pennants for your school or house's favorite team to create some personalized designs. Gather as much glue, glitter, sequins and buttons as you can and let your preschoolers go wild on the pennants. If there is no team in your area or the class is divided, you can usually purchase blank felt pennants at a craft store. This project can get messy but kids enjoy it. This will help the child's family to root for the team in style.
- Using some toilet paper rolls your kids can create a team's worth of players. You will need the toilet paper rolls, scissors, glue, paper and a printer or some markers and crayons. There are templates available at the DLTK website where you can print out the feet, uniform, arms and face. You can also just use it as a guideline to let your kids be as creative as they wish with the player. Glue on the face, arms, uniform and feet and stand the player up with the other players. This can also be a fun project to hang from the ceiling.
- Have your kids create a headband to support their favorite team's defensive effort. A popular subject of football cheers is "D-Fence." Using pipe cleaners, construction paper, a headband, scissors and glue, you can make your kids part of the chant. Trace a D and a picture of a fence on some construction paper and let the kids cut it out (with supervision). Have them glue the D and the fence to the two pipe cleaners. Then wrap the pipe cleaners around the headband with the D on the left and the fence on the right. If nothing else, this will give your kids' parents a kick when they get home.
