- 1). Insert the XP installation CD into the computer you are going to use to hold the installation files in. Open Windows Explorer (right-click "Start," select "Explore") and navigate to the CD.
- 2). Copy the i386 folder from the CD to your computer. Right-click on the folder that you copied and select "Sharing and Security..." and choose to share it over your network.
- 3). Go to the computer you want to install Windows XP on and click the "Start" button, then click "Run," type "cmd" and hit the "Enter" key. Type "net use z: \\server_name\i386" (without quotes) where "server_name" is the name of the computer that is hosting the i386 folder on your network. This command maps the i386 folder to drive "z:" on your local computer.
- 4). Type "z:\i386\winnt /s:Z:\i386" into the command prompt (without quotes) to start the Windows installation process. Wait for the computer to reboot and for the Windows XP Setup Welcome Screen to appear.
- 5). Press "Enter" at the start-up screen, press F8 to agree to the license terms and conditions and then choose what partition you wish to install Windows on and press "Enter."
- 6). Press the "Enter" key again to start the installation process. This process may take over an hour to complete depending on the speed of your network. During this installation, you will need to enter in the product ID for your XP installation and set the date and time zone for the computer. Once the installation finishes, you can use the computer.
