- 1). The first five rows of stitches will use different combinations of the knit and purl stitch, whereas the last three rows will be a repeat of previous combinations. Create the length that you desire for each row by repeating the pattern completely.
- 2). Begin row 1 by combining 1 knit stitch with 5 purl stitches. For row 2, knit 4 and purl 2. In Row 3, knit 3 and purl 3. Row 4 contains 2 knit stitches and 4 purl stitches. Row 5 contains, you guessed it, 5 knit stitches and 1 purl stitch. Notice that rows one through five mirror each other. Remember to repeat the entire pattern for each row for your desired length.
- 3). Now comes the final three rows. Row 6 repeats row 4; row 7 repeats row 3; and row 8 repeats row 2. Once again, repeat the patterns in each row for length.
- 4). Once you have stitched eight rows of the length you need, repeat the eight rows until your project has reached the desired width. Of course, you can combine the pennant stitch with other patterned stitches to create a unique project of your own.
- 5). Pennant stitches are also called pennant pleats because the pattern tends to fold in on itself. Using this stitch in the middle of another knitting pattern will help to flatten the material.
