- 1). Separate a chunk of air dry clay into two halves. The amount of air dry clay you need depends on the size of your bone. To make a fossil from a chicken bone, you only need about a softball-sized chunk of clay.
- 2). Roll the two pieces of clay into flat sheets of clay. Roll them so they are each at least as thick as your bone.
- 3). Lay one sheet of clay onto your paper plate and smooth a layer of vegetable oil over the surface of the entire sheet.
- 4). Press your bone into the center of the sheet of clay and smooth some oil over it as well.
- 5). Lay the other sheet of clay over the bone and press down to make an accurate impression.
- 6). Allow the clay to dry according to the package instructions and separate the two sheets of clay. The oil you spread over the surface should make them separate with ease. Your fossil is the indentation that the bone left in the clay.
