- 1). Use scissors to cut newspaper into ¼-to-½ inch strips. The easiest way to accomplish this is to first cut the sheets of paper in half along the already present fold line. This produces strips that can be applied to your carton seamlessly.
- 2). Put 2 cups of flour in the bowl.
- 3). Pour water into bowl and stir until flour becomes the consistency of pancake batter. Scoop some mixture into your hands and open your fingers, if the mixture slides easily through your fingers but leaves a coating, you have accomplished the desired consistency.
- 4). Fully open the top portion of the carton by opening the side opposite the side pre-split for pouring.
- 5). Take the strips of paper (one at a time) and coat them on both sides with the mache mixture. You can accomplish this by either submerging the strip in the bowl or applying the mixture by hand.
- 6). Run your fingers down either side of the strip of paper to remove excess paste. Your strip of paper should be fully saturated, but not dripping.
- 7). Starting at the top portion of the vase, take each strip and smooth down in a vertical direction.
- 8). Repeat Step 7 until the entire carton is covered with strips, then place it where it can dry undisturbed.
- 1). Make sure that the carton is dry. When the paper mache mixture is dry, it turns white. Verify that there are no grey areas on the vase before moving on to the next step. If there are any gray areas, allow the vase to dry for at least 12 more hours.
- 2). Paint any design you wish on the carton using acrylic or any other type of heavy paint. Make sure the paint is heavy enough to fully cover the white background and to fill in any cracks or crevices created when the mache dried.
- 3). Place the carton somewhere to dry undisturbed.
- 4). Once the vase is dry it is ready for water and flowers
