- 1). Make certain you clicked the "Next" button when prompted during the installation of ViaVoice. Clicking to exit out of the installation instead of clicking on "Next" prevents ViaVoice from completing its installation process properly.
- 2). Turn off audio settings with special effects if ViaVoice does not respond to your voice. Examples of special effects include 3D sound and full-duplex. In Windows XP, check the sound card for these audio settings by clicking on "Start" and then selecting "Advanced Settings" under Device Manager.
- 3). Speak as you normally would if ViaVoice has poor recognition of your voice. Do not speak too slowly or too quickly. Avoid slurring your words or overemphasizing words.
- 4). Position the foam pad of your microphone headset about 2 cm, or 3/4 inch, from either side of your mouth, rather than right in front of your mouth. Be certain you keep the microphone boom in the same position at all times when you use ViaVoice and that you have on the foam pad. The boom is the flexible arm of your headset microphone. The foam pad acts as a windshield for your microphone.
- 5). Say only the words you read during the ViaVoice test, rather than speaking with someone else as you record. ViaVoice will pick up anything it hears from you, including what you say to another person, your coughs, and hesitation words, such as "um." Also, wait for a noisy room to become quiet before you take the reading test, so that ViaVoice can clearly detect your voice.
- 6). Practice your dictation without smoking, eating or drinking, which all interfere with the sound quality of your voice.
