How to Felt Drawers

    • 1). Cut a piece of newspaper so it is about 6 inches longer and wider than the bottom of the drawer. Center the paper in the drawer bottom. Smooth the paper, working from the center toward the outside. Press the paper into the the corners of the drawer and around the edges.

    • 2). Use a butter knife to make deep creases in the paper where the bottom of the drawer meets the sides. Remove the paper. Use scissors to cut the newspaper on the creases to make a paper template for the felt liner.

    • 3). Test fit the template in the drawer. You may need to trim its edges a little with scissors for a smooth fit.

    • 4). Place the felt fabric on a smooth, flat surface. Smooth out any wrinkles. Place the template on the felt. Pin the template with one sewing pin to the approximate center of the felt. Smooth out the template on the felt, then pin the corners of the template to the felt. Cut out the felt liner along the edges of the template. Remove the pins. Test fit the felt liner in the drawer and trim to fit if necessary.

    • 5). Position the felt liner in the drawer. While keeping the edge closest to you in place, fold the back edge of the liner toward the front. Cut a 2 inch piece of double-stick carpet tape. Stick the tape to the exposed drawer bottom, near the center of the drawer. Carefully unfold the felt liner and reposition it to fit the drawer bottom. Press the center of the liner so the felt adheres to the drawer bottom.

    • 6). Measure and note the length and width of the drawer. Cut two pieces of carpet tape, each about 1 inch shorter than the length of the drawer. Cut two more pieces of tape, each about 1 inch shorter than the width of the drawer.

    • 7). Fold the outer edges of the liner toward the taped center, exposing the outer edges of the drawer bottom. Position the double-stick tape along the edges of the drawer bottom and press it in place. Carefully unfold the felt liner and gently rest its edges on the double-stick tape. Adjust the liner's position if necessary. Press the felt to adhere the liner's edges to the drawer bottom.
