- 1). Make a length of chain stitches that is as wide as you want the finished bill-style brim to be where it will attach to the hat. Add one more chain and make a single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook and in every chain across. Chain one and turn.
- 2). Work two more rows evenly. To do this, make one single crochet in every single crochet stitch across the row, then chain one and turn. Repeat this step for two rows, so you now have a total of three rows in your hat brim.
- 3). Decrease the side stitches on the next row. To do this, single crochet two together over the first two stitches of the row. Then make one single crochet in each stitch across the center of the row and single crochet two together across the last two stitches. Chain one and turn, then repeat for the next row. Fasten off at the end of that row.
- 4). Repeat the entire process to make a second layer for your hat brim.
- 5). Cut out a piece of cardboard, such as from a cereal box or the back of a notepad, to be the same shape as your hat brim. The cardboard should be approximately 1/4 inch smaller on all sides. Use a large-eye blunt needle and some spare yarn to sew a seam to connect the two pieces of the brim together around the curved edge, then slide the cardboard inside and sew the flat edge to the front of the hat.
