How to Crochet a Granny Square Baby Blanket

Creating a Granny Square Baby Blanket

    • 1). Begin by chaining 4 and joining into a ring with a slip stitch. This is your foundation chain.

    • 2). Chain 3, then make 3 double crochet stitches into the center of the ring. Chain 1. Work the 3 double crochet, chain 1 sequence three times, then make 2 double crochets into the center of the ring and join the yarn to the third stitch of the beginning chain with a slip stitch. You will have 4 double-crochet groups and 4 chain-1 spaces. This is your first round.

Slip stitch from the end of the first round until you reach the chain stitch at the first corner. Chain 3, then work 2 double crochets, chain 1, then 3 double crochets into the corner space. Chain 1, skip the 3 double crochets from the previous round, then make 3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets into the next chain-1 space. You will repeat this corner sequence two more times to the end of the round. Chain 1, then join the yarn to the third chain of the beginning chain with a slip stitch.

    • 4). Chain 3, then work the corner sequence (3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet) into the chain-1 sequence at the start of the round. For the sides, chain 1, skip the next 3 double crochets below, then work 3 double crochet into the next chain-1 space. Skip the next 3 double crochets and repeat the corner sequence at the next chain-1 space. You will continue this pattern for each side of the granny square.

    • 5). Repeat step 4 for each succeeding round. Chain 3 at the beginning of each round, which counts as the first double crochet in the first corner sequence. Work a corner sequence, then work the chain 1, 3 double crochet sequence into each chain-1 space on the side. Work the corner sequence at the each corner and the side sequence in each chain-1 space on the sides of the square. Increase the number of side sequences (chain 1, 3 double crochet) as the size of the blanket increases.

    • 6). When the blanket has reached about 36 inches on each side, or about 30 rounds, finish off by cutting the yarn about two inches away from the last stitch. Pull this piece of yarn through the final loop on your hook to make a knot. Weave the remaining length of yarn into the blanket.
