- 1). Measure the length from the top of your desk edge down to the floor. Add 1 inch to this measurement and write this new "skirt length" measurement down on your paper. Measure around the entire top edge of your desk where you will attach the skirt. Write down this "original skirt width" measurement.
- 2). Calculate how full you want your skirt to be. For a very full skirt, multiply your original skirt width measurement by 2.5 and write this number down to find your new skirt width. For a less full skirt, multiply the original skirt width measurement by 1.5 and write this number down to find your new skirt width.
- 3). Prepare your fabric by washing and drying it according to the care directions. Iron the fabric and lay it down on a large, flat surface. Cut out a piece of fabric the length of your skirt length measurement and the width of the new skirt width measurement.
- 4). Hem both short sides of the skirt. Fold over each raw edge ¼-inch twice. Use an iron to seal in the fold and pin into place. Sew each side with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Hem both long sides of the skirt. Hem both short sides of the skirt. Fold over each raw edge 1/4-inch twice. Use and iron to seal in the fold and pin into place. Sew each side with a 1/8-inch seam allowance.
- 5). Lay your fabric wrong side up and a flat surface. Cut a length of the ¾-inch elastic the same length as your original skirt width measurement. Pin one of the short edges of the elastic to the upper left edge of the fabric. Pin the other edge of the elastic to the upper right edge of the fabric.
- 6). Stretch the elastic across the upper edge of the fabric, pinning generously as you go. You want to stretch the entire width of elastic across the upper edge and pin in solidly into place. Take your time in stretching and pinning, and adjust if necessary.
- 7). Sew the elastic into place on the top edge of the elastic with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Repeat on the bottom edge of the elastic with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Remove all of your pins. When you remove the pins, the elastic will contract and the fabric will gather and ruffle up so that the skirt is the same size as your elastic.
- 8). Place the two upper edges of the skirt together where the elastic is, with one side slightly overlapping the other by about half an inch. Pin into place. Sew into place with your sewing machine. Only sew where the elastic is; leave the remaining seam unsewn so that it stays open.
- 9). Place the skirt on your desk with the elastic portion resting on the edge of the desk. Arrange the skirt so that the seam you just sewed, where the elastic meets, is in the center of the front of the desk, directly in front of your chair.
