How to Use the Freeware Windows Installer for Java

    • 1). Go to the Java website (see Resources) using your Web browser and click the "Free Java Download" button on the site.

    • 2). Click on the "Download" button on the next page. This will bring up a download box with buttons to run or save the executable install file. Click on the "Run" button to start installing the software immediately. If you want to install the software later, click "Save" instead to save the file to a directory of your choice. In this case, when you are ready to install, navigate to the directory where you saved your file and double-click on it to start installation.

    • 3). Accept the license agreement by clicking on the "Install" button. Click "Next" on each successive dialog box that pops up. Some dialog boxes will present you with optional software that you can choose to install; select the ones that you want and continue to install by pressing "Next."

    • 4). Click "Close" on the last dialog box to finish your installation. Close and restart your browser if necessary if necessary to activate your Java installation.

    • 5). Verify that your Java installation is working properly by clicking on the test applet at the bottom of the Java installation Web page. (See Resources.)
