- 1). Mix 3 quarts of water with 1 quart of bleach and 1/4 cup of powdered laundry detergent. Use an old toothbrush or a sponge to scrub the caulk with this solution.
- 2). Remove old caulk. If the mildew has permeated the caulk or is beneath the caulk, you will need to remove it and replace it. Begin by cutting away the bulk of the caulk with a razor blade.
- 3). Lay a wet rag on top of non-acrylic caulk overnight. This soften the caulk for easy removal.
- 4). Soak acrylic caulk in 90 percent isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) until it comes up.
- 5). Use strong alkaline solvents, oven cleaner or powdered cleansers to remove silicone caulk. Silicone caulk is notoriously difficult to remove and may require several applications.
