- 1). Take up the floor trim around the perimeter of the room using your prybar and hammer.
- 2). Determine the direction of the hardwood flooring under the linoleum by pulling up a corner of the linoleum where you can, using a razor and drywall knife if necessary. Once you know the direction of the boards, cut parallel lines in the linoleum surface in that direction, from wall to wall, putting the lines 5 or 6 feet from each other and crossing the whole room.
- 3). Push the front edge of your drywall knife under one edge of the linoleum under one of the cut lines, near one end of it, enough to pry up the edge. Move all along the edge, from one end to another, creating a lip that runs the length of one edge of the section.
- 4). Jam the front edge of your floor scraper under the lip, in a direction almost parallel with but slightly diagonal to the direction of the floorboards. Push the scraper forward repeatedly, loosening the section of linoleum while gradually pushing across both its width and length. Work the scraper to get the whole section up in one piece, if possible.
- 5). Repeat Step 4 for each section, picking up and discarding the linoleum as you go. Do the whole floor.
- 6). Scrape off the residual glue and underlayment from the hardwood using a razor scraper. Scrape with the direction of the floorboards.
