- Black mold will settle wherever it can find food and moisture to eat and drink. Black mold can settle in your insulation and eat the paper insulation wrapping as well as the dust that is in and around the insulation, which generally only happens when the insulation is in a damp area or if your home is very humid.
- If black mold is growing on hard, nonporous surfaces in your home, you can easily clean them by spraying the surface with a bleach-based cleaner that will kill the black mold and prevent it from growing back. Insulation, however, is a very porous surface. When mold begins to grow there, it will settle deep into the insulation where removing it is impossible. Instead, you'll need to replace the insulation.
- Because black mold can eat dust and organic matter, it can grow anywhere in your home. Thus, preventing excess moisture in your home is key to helping ensure that mold and mildew doesn't grow there. Do this by fixing leaks and flooding as soon as you possibly can. Install ventilation fans in bathrooms and laundry rooms, which tend to have a lot of excess moisture. If you live in a humid climate, install a dehumidifier.
- Black mold can be toxic for some types of people. Susceptible individuals include those with asthma or other respiratory issues. It also includes pregnant women, the elderly and small children who may have weaker immune systems. Health issues range from a mild allergic reaction to a lung infection that could lead to asthma and chronic respiratory issues. Prevent these by removing moldy insulation as soon as you notice it.
