- 1). Clean as you go. Upon entering a room, tidy up quickly by fluffing pillows, dusting tables and pictures, and sweeping the floor. Always take dishes and cups to the dishwasher or sink immediately upon leaving a room to prevent clutter.
- 2). Write out a housecleaning schedule to keep you on track and organized. Heavier chores such as carpet cleaning, window washing and baseboard cleaning can be done on a weekly or monthly basis. Planning ahead of time helps eliminate interference in family activities.
- 3). Listen to the radio or an upbeat CD to make time go by faster. Music boosts your mood and speed, taking your mind off of the "chore" aspect of cleaning. This, in turn, makes cleaning a little more fun.
- 4). Carry garbage bags or small plastic bags with you when you clean. This way, you won't have to backtrack for supplies and you will save time.
- 5). Store all cleaning supplies in the rooms they are designed for. For example, store toilet cleaner and tub cleaner in the bathroom while keeping window cleaner and dusting spray close to the living area. This allows for easier access to what you need when you need it.
- 6). Take the phone off the hook, eliminating distraction. It is easy to get caught up in a conversation with a friend and forget your housework. The less distractions you have, the faster you can clean house and do what you want to do.
- 7). Place yourself on a time limit. For example, give yourself only an hour or two to clean the entire house. For better time management, break up this time between rooms, such as spending 15 to 20 minutes per room of your home.
