After selling nearly two million units, the Ionic Breeze air filtration system was taken off the market in 2005. A Consumer Reports article performed tests on the Ionic Breeze and several other air ionizers to show that the product caused more harm than good. The Sharper Image company, manufacturer of the Ionic Breeze, took the product off the market, sued Consumer Reports, lost and then closed down all their retail stores in 2008. - An air filter is meant to remove the smoke, pollen, dander and dust from the air to improve its cleanliness. Because the Ionic Breeze does not have a fan to filter and exchange these dirty air particles, it takes in as much as it can in its collector plate and then moves still-contaminated air back out of it. The May 2005 Consumer Reports issue listed the Ionic Breeze and four other ionizing filters as performing poorly when it comes to cleaning the air.
- One of the reasons that many consumers were quick to recommend the Ionic Breeze when it was on the market is that they could see it working. The device quickly fills up with visible dust, smoke and pollen. Once the collector plate is full, it ceases to function. Cleaning the device is extremely difficult especially for devices that have become full of smoke and tar from cigarettes. The filters of the device can be replaced but that replacement does little to help it work if the collector plate is stopped up.
- The major problem that caused the Ionic Breeze to be taken off the market was the release of ozone over the recommended limit of 50 parts per billion. When ionizing the air particles, the device releases this ozone into the room, leaving the room smelling clean but having horrible side effects. Indoor ozone may increase sensitivity to mold and pollen, deaden the sense of smell, worsen asthma and cause permanent damage to the lungs. Significant amounts of ozone may even increase the level of premature death, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
- Since the Ionic Breeze system gets clogged so easily, users are tempted to take it apart to clean the device. The problem is that the device is not constructed for individuals to take apart and it may break when dismantled. Taking apart the Ionic Breeze may cause the plastic to break and the motor to break down. The internal filter of the device should be changed often to avoid device problems.
