- 1). Mix 4 parts water and 1 part sugar.
- 2). Bring the solution to a boil for two minutes.
- 3). Allow the solution to cool before pouring some in the feeder.
- 4). Store the remainder of the feeding mix in the refrigerator (in a jar with a lid).
- 5). Clean the feeder once a week with vinegar and hot water. Once a month, soak the feeder in a solution of 1/4 cup bleach and 1 gallon of water, for at least an hour. Rinse thoroughly, and rinse again.
- 6). Start filling the feeder when spring has arrived (April or May depending on your locality). You can keep on feeding hummingbirds well into autumn, depending on their migration time. Make sure to look out your window or sit in your garden often to enjoy the marvelous behaviors of these feathered friends. Consider getting a guidebook or identification card to see how many species you can identify.
