- 1). Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove excess dirt, oil and grime. Use a slow back and forth motion, going over each section of carpet several times. Change the vacuum bag before it is completely full for maximum efficiency.
- 2). Treat any pet stains with an enzymatic cleaner. These sprays are found at pet stores, and effectively neutralize the odors from urine, vomit and feces stains. Spray the affected areas thoroughly, and wait 24 hours before rinsing with clean water. If the stains soaked through to the carpet pad, lift the carpet up and spray the pad, as well.
- 3). Rent an extraction carpet cleaner from a local hardware store or home store. These machines shoot clean water into the carpet and then suck dirty water out, effectively removing oil and dirt from pets. Follow the manufacturer's directions and use only recommended cleaning products.
