Treatment to Kill Indoor Mold

    Initial Treatment

    • If you find mold growing in your home, there are several ways to kill it: wash it off with detergent and water; wash it off with bleach and water (1 gallon water to 1 cup bleach); or, for a more natural approach, mix 2 cups of water with either 2 tsp. of tea tree oil OR 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract. Combine in a spray bottle and apply to mold. Let dry and then wipe off with a damp cloth.

Whatever approach you use, make sure to allow the area to dry completely before you move furniture back into place. Unfortunately, absorbent materials that become moldy, like carpets, ceiling tiles and drywall, will likely need to be replaced; bedding or throw rugs can be tossed into the washing machine.

Once you've gotten rid of the mold, it's important that you identify the source of the water or dampness and fix it; otherwise, the mold will grow back.

    Preventing Mold From Growing

    • Since mold spores are found everywhere, it's impractical to attempt to eliminate them. However, according to the EPA, there are a number of things you can do to prevent mold spores from finding your home hospitable:

-Fix leaks and other water problems like poor drainage or seepage.
-Use a dehumidifier and air conditioner, and keep the humidity levels low (30% to 60%) for the best results.
-Wipe up water that escapes the shower curtain.
-Vent your dryer, bathroom and other moisture-producing sources outside.
-Prevent condensation on windows, piping and floors by adding insulation.
-Don't install carpeting in areas where there is a lot of moisture.
-If you experience a flood, clean and dry the damp or wet parts of your building within 24 to 48 hours.
