- 1). Measure the outer edge of the fireplace hearth and take note of the measurements.
- 2). Select the type of trim or molding that you would like to frame around the hearth.
- 3). Flip the molding over so the back side is facing up and measure out the lengths you need. Make a mark on the trim.
- 4). Cut the two pieces of molding needed to frame the sides of the hearth. Cut them at a 45-degree angle that starts at the length indicated by the mark. The cut ends of the trim pieces on either side should be going in opposite directions. The molding piece on the right should have a cut angle that goes up and to the right. The molding piece on the left of the hearth should have a cut angle that goes up and to the left. Use an adjustable circular saw to make the cuts.
- 5). Cut the top piece of molding that goes across the top of the hearth. Start at the marks on either end and cut outward at a 45-degree angle. You should end up with a molding piece where both angles start at the bottom edge of the molding and go up and out from each other in opposite directions.
- 6). Place one of the side pieces up to the hearth and tack one finishing nail through the trim and into the wall. Use a level or square to adjust it so that it is perpendicular to the floor, then tack several more nails in to secure it. Tack the top piece of trim in place next, checking it for level as well. Repeat with the final side piece. If a piece turns out to be a bit too long, sand down the edge. Use wood putty if there is a gap.
