- 1). Insert the end of the drain snake into the bottom of the toilet with the tip of the auger completely withdrawn. Use a rubber sleeve to provide protection to the porcelain. The tip should be facing backwards and upwards as this is the direction of the toilet trap.
- 2). Grab the handle and rotate while pushing down on the road of the auger. Position the rotating tip of the drain snake upwards into the toilet trap. At this point you will be required to work the cable both backwards and forwards as necessary, but while doing this, make sure to keep the rubber foot of the auger securely in place.
- 3). Rotate the drain snake counterclockwise when you begin to feel resistance. This resistance indicates that a clogging object has been located within the workings of the toilet. Continue to rotating counterclockwise as you begin to withdraw the cable and, eventually, the obstruction.
- 4). Retract the drain snake fully until the object has been recovered. It is quite likely that auger will be fully withdrawn and no object will be visible. Simply repeat the process until you have finally dislodged the object. If continuing resistance occurs, work the drain snake back and forth repeatedly when the snake meets the object causing the resistance in an attempt to break it up.
