- 1). Turn the circuit breaker labeled "furnace" or "air handler" off. The circuit breaker labeled "AC" or "heat pump" connects to the outside unit.
- 2). Remove the screws from the top panel on the heat pump's furnace with the correct size nut driver, either 1/4- or 5/16-inch. Set the panel and screws aside.
- 3). Open the furnace control-box's cover with a nut driver. Follow the wires from outside of the unit. They will enter the control box.
- 4). Inspect the components inside of the control box. Look for the heat strip, which penetrates the back wall of the control box and has, depending on its size, either two or four wires connected to it. Find the heat relay, the small black box that one set of wires from the heat strip connects to. Find the terminal block, the metal bar that the other set of wires from the heat strip connect to.
- 5). Remove the wire(s) from the heat strip to the heat relay. Use a set of pliers to slide the wire connections straight off the terminals of both the heat relay and the heat strip.
- 6). Remove the wire(s) from the heat strip to the terminal block with the pliers. The terminal block sometimes uses screws to hold the wires in place, which will require a flat-head screwdriver to loosen. If the terminal block uses screws then retighten the screws when complete.
- 7). Replace the control box cover and the furnace access panel. Flip the circuit breaker to the "On" position.
