- 1). Unfasten the two screws with a Phillip's screwdriver that are on the faceplate on the inside of the door holding the doorknob with the locking mechanism.
- 2). Slide the face plate and lock that fits against the outside edge away from the door so you can access the interior locking mechanism.
- 3). Locate the "E" shaped piece of metal that sits under the door latch and then remove the interior part of the locking mechanism from the door as well as the "E" clip.
- 4). Pull the opposite side doorknob off and locate the black cam piece that goes through the locking mechanism, then remove it by sliding it straight out.
- 5). Find the large hub on the black cam piece that has a slot in the center and set the "E" clip in the slot with the center prong of the "E" inserted in the slot.
- 6). Squeeze the "E" clip together carefully with a pair of pliers so that it is attached to the cam piece, applying just enough pressure so that you don't break the prongs of the clip.
- 7). Slide the "E" clip into the locking mechanism with the prongs facing down and then reinsert the clip and cam piece with the locking mechanism back inside the door.
- 8). Reattach the faceplates on each side of the door and fasten the unit together with the screws that were removed.
- 9). Adjust the screws so that the faceplates are tight but allow the locking mechanism to move freely.
