- 1). Turn off your water at the main, which is usually located in your yard, near the street. If you're in an apartment, it will most likely be located in a utility closet.
- 2). Flush the toilet to remove all the water in the tank. Do this until it no longer fills with water to empty out any remaining water in the supply valve.
- 3). Remove the toilet supply hose from the water shutoff valve with the adjustable wrench.
- 4). Remove the water shutoff valve. Use the wrench to unscrew the supply valve from the inlet pipe. You may need to adjust the opening of the wrench.
- 5). Clean off the pipe threads on the inlet with steel wool. Wipe down with a rag.
- 6). Wrap the threads on the outlet with plumber's tape.
- 7). Screw on the new water shutoff valve. Adjust with the wrench until it is tight. Turn the valve to the shutoff position by turning it clockwise.
- 8). Wrap the outlet on the supply valve with plumber's tape. Attach the water supply hose from the tank. Tighten the coupling hand tight, and turn an additional turn with the wrench.

Open the water shutoff valve. Watch for leaks. Tighten any couplings if necessary. Allow the toilet tank to fill. Flush the toilet. Keep an eye on the water supply line and shutoff valve for leaks.
