- 1). Sprinkle some baking soda over the rug and allow it to sit for at least two hours. The baking soda will help absorb the mildew odor. Vacuum the rug thoroughly and immediately change the bag to prevent mildew from growing in the vacuum cleaner.
- 2). Pour some white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the entire rug. The strong acidity of vinegar will kill any mildew that's causing odor. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and wipe clean with a damp cloth.
- 3). Take your rug outside to dry in direct sunlight, if possible. Sunlight will kill any remaining mildew. If you can't take your rug outside, use a space heater or fan to dry the rug. Open up windows and drapes to let fresh air circulate through the room.
- 4). Spray a fungicidal spray on your rug to keep mildew from forming or causing unpleasant odors on your rug.
- 5). Clean spills on your rug as soon as they occur, and use a dehumidifier to remove moisture in the air.
