- 1). Prepare the surface of the concrete. If the concrete is new, wait at least 30 days until the concrete has completely cured. If the concrete is old, check the surface for cracks, stains, pits and oil patches. If the surface is sealed, it will not accept the stain. Patch any areas that need repair with a concrete patch, clean any oil spills or stains with the industrial cleaner, and scrape away any residue with a scraper. Once the floor is prepared, or if the concrete is new, wash the floor down with a hose and let dry completely. Use a wet vacuum to remove standing water if the surface is uneven.
- 2). Test the colors you have chosen in a small area to see if they achieve the desired effect. Concrete stain is a chemical reaction between acidic salts and the lime in concrete, and every surface will look different with a stain application.
- 3). Apply stain to the entire surface, working in small sections and using a paint sprayer or roller. Play with the texture of the stain as you apply it.
- 4). Dry the floor, following the stain manufacturer's recommended drying tim. Drying time will vary with humidity and the conditions of the area you stained.
- 5). Seal the concrete with the concrete sealer, applying it in the same manner as the stain, and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
