- 1). Clean the threads of the two pipes or plumbing fixtures you plan to join together. There should be no loose dirt, grease, or foreign particles of any kind on the pipe threads.
- 2). Locate the end of the Teflon tape and start unraveling it. Place the end of the tape onto the pipe threads so that it lays flat in place. Rotate the tape roll around the pipe in the same direction as the threads. Since you will turn the pipe in a clockwise motion to tighten it, the tape should be wound so that its loose end faces away from the lead side of the thread
- 3). Load the tape onto the thread for 2 or 3 turns or to a thickness of about .12 to .16 inches always making sure it lies flat on the threads.
- 4). Break off the tape from the roll using a scissor or razor blade. Press the loose end of the tape flat onto the threads.
- 5). Tighten the pipe into the other pipe or plumbing fixture using your wrenches. The tape should be inside the joint with a bit of it remaining visible after the pipes are tightened.
