- 1). Open your apartment windows, and consider purchasing several standing fans to place in various rooms of your apartment. Ventilation and air circulation are the best ways to eliminate smoke odor. Keep your windows open as long as possible, especially when you are in the process of cleaning.
- 2). Submerge cloth items that cannot be bleached, such as small rugs, curtains and pieces of clothing, into a solution of 1 cup of powdered dishwasher detergent mixed with 1 gallon of warm water. Soak the items overnight, then drain and launder them as you would regularly. Repeat the process if the items still smell like smoke.
- 3). Soak cloth items that can be bleached in a solution of 1/4 cup of trisodium phosphate, 1 cup of bleach and 1 gallon of water. Launder a usual after they have been submerged overnight.
- 4). Steam your carpets with a rented professional carpet steamer. Avoid carpet shampoo, which will simply seal in the smoke smell.
- 5). Clean soot from your walls with a chemical sponge you can purchase from a professional cleaning supply store.
- 6). Wash your walls with a chemical cleaner that contains trisodium phosphate. Paint thinner may also work, but be careful not to breathe in its toxic fumes. While washing your walls, keep your windows open and be sure to wear protective cleaning gloves.
