- Since a pergola is accompanied by a walkway and sometimes a seating area underneath the structure, height is an important consideration. Therefore a pergola needs to be tall enough so that any person can walk underneath, yet the overhead lattice framework should be at a height that allows the visitor to enjoy the sight and smell of the vegetation.
- The ceiling lattice work needs to be supported by at least four posts, one at each corner. Most modern pergolas will probably be built with wood, but a masonry support system can be installed as well. In either case a footing is needed for each column. Larger structures will need more posts, located along the outside edges for additional support.
- The roof-like structure needs to be strong enough to hold the live plant material. Designers should keep in mind that over time, the vines and vegetation will grow and gain weight. Also, the designer must align the roof members so the openings are small and plants can easily grow across the top of the pergola.
